Prologue

An invitation to pause

There are seasons in life that invite us to slow down, return to what we love, and make room for the people who matter most. As I begin my thirty-third year, I wanted to celebrate in a way that reflects exactly that.

Brunch has always felt like the perfect way to gather. Summer mornings have a way of encouraging us to linger a little longer, share a few laughs, raise a mimosa, and simply enjoy being together without rushing to the next thing.

Afterward, we’ll wander through one of my favorite places, a bookstore. Every shelf holds the possibility of discovering something new while reconnecting with stories that have shaped us. There’s something especially meaningful about exploring stories that celebrate Black voices, history, and imagination, and I can’t think of a better place to spend the afternoon.

This birthday also marks a personal return to one of the hobbies I’ve treasured most: reading. It’s a chance to rediscover that joy and continue building a library filled with stories that challenge, inspire, and stay with me long after the final page.

Whether you leave with a new favorite book, a meaningful conversation, or simply a beautiful memory from the day, I’m grateful you’re part of this chapter.

Chapter Three

Build My Library

Books have shaped the way I think, learn, imagine, and see the world. Some of these titles sparked my love of reading. Others have been on my list for years.

If you’d like to celebrate with a book, you’re welcome to choose one from this library. If there’s a book that has had a lasting impact on your life, or one you think I’d enjoy, I’d love that too.
